"Small Farm Planning"

  • September 2nd - Indeed, Starting a Farm Is Not Easy

Today we harvested swiss chard, cherry and slicer tomatoes, and italian peppers. Then we packed the van and prepared for the market. I also checksummed assumptions and challenges in my weekend startup farm business modeling while I rode around with Jamie doing chores and projects.

"Prioritization"

  • September 10th - Being Mindful of Rain

I washed tomato trays, harvested cherry tomatoes and basil, watered pigs and chickens, then assisted with deliveries and CSA pickup. As we head into the fall, rain is more often, sometimes beneficial and sometimes detrimental to crops.

A quick retrospective of the month's farm operations and prioritization changes. Most of our activities don't change week over week, but every so often something reminds you to stay on your toes.

We weeded, planted, weeded some more, then prepared for deliveries and a CSA pickups. I am also getting better at anticipating what the farmer's priorities will be per day and how the team will be distributed to accomplish what needs to get done.

  • August 12th - So Many Hot Peppers and Sunflowers

We harvested swiss chard, hot peppers and sunflowers. The rest was odds and ends tasks, chores, and packing for market. Coming home on these hot days, it's hard to do anything but shower and relax, so no progress on the homelab was made today.
